At the invitation of the President of Estonia’s Parliament, National Council president Dominique de Buman and the second vice president of the Council of States, Géraldine Savary, attended the Conference of Speakers of the EU Parliaments on 23 and 24 April. The focus of the two-day event was on the future of the EU and European security and defence policy. Conference delegates discussed the EU’s multi-annual financial framework, the state of Brexit negotiations, current security policy challenges and cooperation among European states on defence policy.

The conference, at which delegations from all EU member states, candidate countries and EFTA/EEA countries were represented, provided an opportunity to actively foster contacts and hold intensive exchanges on parliamentary interests. Mr de Buman and the second vice president of the Council of States, Géraldine Savary, also attended an informal EFTA/EEA meeting with the president of Norway’s parliament, Tone Wilhelmsen Trøen, and the president of Iceland’s parliament, Steingrimur J. Sigfusson.
