On 7 February, the delegation met with the ambassadors of the EFTA states to the World Trade Organization (WTO). This meeting was very useful for the members of the Parliamentary Committee to obtain first-hand information on the priorities of the four EFTA states for the 13th WTO Ministerial Conference in Abu Dhabi. Equally useful were the discussions held the following day with the ambassadors of the Mercosur states, the South American trading bloc with which EFTA is negotiating a free trade agreement.
A key event on day two was a joint meeting held with the EFTA Committee on Third-Country Relations. EFTA's trade relations with non-EU states were discussed, with a particular focus on the ongoing negotiations with India, the aforementioned Mercosur, Thailand and other trading partners.
Further meetings were held with the Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator (GESDA) foundation on the interactions between science diplomacy and policy-making in international trade and with the Chinese ambassador to the WTO, and an interesting discussion was held with Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
During the two-day event, the members of the Parliamentary Committee were joined by representatives of the EFTA Consultative Committee, EFTA's other consultative body, which brings together representatives of industry and labour.
The EFTA Parliamentary Committee is a forum for parliamentarians from the four EFTA States, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Thomas Aeschi (National Council, SVP, ZG) chairs the Swiss parliamentary delegation to EFTA. In this capacity, in 2024 he also heads the entire EFTA Parliamentary Committee, the chair rotating every twelve months between the delegations of the EFTA countries' parliaments.
In addition to its president, the EFTA/EU Delegation was represented by National Council president Eric Nussbaumer (SP, BL), National Council members Elisabeth Schneider-Schneiter (Centre, BL) and Nicolas Walder (Greens, GE), and by Council of States members Damian Müller (FDP, LU), Carlo Sommaruga (SP, GE) and Benedikt Würth (Centre, SG).
