On 24 October, President of the National Council Eric Nussbaumer (SP, BL) and President of the Council of States Eva Herzog (SP, BS) attended the third parliamentary summit of the International Crimea Platform in Riga.

The conference, co-chaired by the speaker of the Latvian parliament, Daiga Mieriņa and the chairman of the Ukrainian parliament, Ruslan Stefanchuk, aimed to strengthen international support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine. More than 40 parliamentary delegations took part, while the Ukrainian president addressed the participants in a video message and presented his plan for a just peace. At the conclusion of the event, the participating delegations adopted a joint declaration.

Switzerland's participation in the summit underlines its commitment to a rules-based world order and to peace and stability in Europe. During the plenary debate, Mr Nussbaumer and Ms Herzog condemned Russia’s attack on Ukraine and called for the respect of international law, including in the Russian-occupied territories. They emphasised Switzerland’s commitment to a just and lasting peace in Ukraine and referred to the Bürgenstock conference as part of this process.

The International Crimea Platform was established in 2021 as a forum for coordination and consultation among states, governments, parliaments, foreign ministries and experts. It aims to raise awareness among policymakers and the public of the ongoing occupation and annexation of the Crimean Peninsula, its negative impact on the human rights of the local population, security in the Black Sea region, global food security and the rules-based world order.

In previous years, the Crimea Platform summit has been held in Zagreb (2022) and in Prague (2023). Switzerland was represented at both events with an official delegation.
