The sandstone Parliament Building, which is now over 100 years old, had begun to show the ravages of time, both inside and out. For the first time in its history it was to become the focus of a major renovation project. In June 2006 it disappeared behind scaffolding and acres of netting. But by the winter of 2007 the scaffolding was dismantled and the work was completed in 2008. Bern’s famous landmark was restored to its former glory and is once again a worthy home for a credible, modern parliament – a reflection of present-day Switzerland.
