The presidents of the National Council and of the Council of States play a key role in Switzerland's inter-parliamentary and international relations. Through their international contacts and exchanges, they establish lasting links with foreign countries and parliaments, and maintain regular relations with the diplomatic corps. They help to raise awareness of Switzerland's democratic system, and represent the country's foreign policy interests, complementing those of the Federal Council. Through their international activities, the Council presidents provide substantial support for government diplomacy.

In their international contacts, the Council presidents are supported by the Presidency and Bilateral Relations Unit, and the Protocol & Travel Unit.
