It is important to Switzerland to remain in close contact with its neighbouring countries – especially when it comes to the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. Following in the footsteps of his predecessor, National Council President Andreas Aebi held a video conference with the President of the Austrian National Council, Wolfgang Sobotka, on 18 December 2020.

The video conference focused on the challenges currently posed by the coronavirus pandemic. The two National Council presidents talked about epidemiological developments in their respective countries and the latest measures they have taken to combat the virus’s spread. In particular, they discussed both countries’ vaccination strategies and their first experiences with mass testing. They both stressed the importance of a successful vaccination campaign to achieve adequate vaccination coverage.

Mr Aebi and Mr Sobotka also exchanged views on the effect the pandemic has had on the economy and discussed the support measures that have been taken to cushion its financial impact. The effect the regulations currently in place in Switzerland and Austria has had on winter tourism was also discussed. Both sides also stressed the importance of cooperation along our shared border in economic and social matters.

The protective measures taken by both parliaments to ensure their councils can continue to function during the pandemic were also discussed. Both parliaments have set up plexiglass dividers in their councils’ chambers and meeting rooms. National Council President Andreas Aebi stated that remote voting has been possible in the National Council since 14 December 2020. Council members who have COVID-19 or are undergoing mandatory quarantine and are therefore unable to attend meetings in Bern can vote from home.

The President of the Austrian National Council, Wolfgang Sobotka, addressed the relationship between Switzerland and the European Union, and voiced his support for a stable partnership and a swift conclusion of the institutional framework agreement. He stated that his country was very interested in achieving a good result in this area – not least because of Austria’s close ties with Switzerland along our shared border.

The President of the National Council, Andreas Aebi, believes the result of the vote on the Limitation Initiative clearly shows that the electorate supports the free movement of persons and the existing Bilateral Agreements. He expressed his confidence that Switzerland and the EU will be able to jointly find a solution. He stressed that the still disputed points will need to be clarified ahead of a vote if the agreement is to be approved by voters.

At the end of their friendly talks, both sides expressed their wish to meet again later this year and to discuss in greater depth the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic.
