The President of the Council of States, Mr Raphaël Comte (PLR/NE), will travel to Vaduz on 25 November for a working visit where he will meet the President of the Landtag, Mr Albert Frick, Foreign Minister Aurelia Frick, and Deputy Prime Minister Thomas Zwiefelhofer.

Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein are part of a common economic and monetary area with open borders. The two countries enjoy very close and longstanding friendly relations. Around 3,600 Swiss nationals live in the Principality, which has a population of 37,600 inhabitants. Collaboration between the two countries has recently been strengthened in the area of education, research and innovation with the signing on 11 November of an agreement and a joint declaration. Representatives from the two countries also meet frequently in the framework of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), in which they enjoy excellent inter-parliamentary relations.

Switzerland has represented the Principality’s interests abroad since 1919. At the beginning of December it will open a consulate-general in Vaduz. Liechtenstein is therefore an important for Switzerland and this meeting will not only provide an opportunity to strengthen the numerous ties between the two countries, but also to address topical issues on which collaboration is indispensable. The talks will also be attended on the Liechtenstein side by Mrs Doris Frick, Liechtenstein’s ambassador to Switzerland, and Mr Josef Hilti, secretary of the Landtag. Mr Comte will be accompanied by Mr Olaf Kjelsen, Switzerland’s ambassador to Liechtenstein.
