The 58th meeting of the European Economic Area (EEA) Joint Parliamentary Committee will be held in Strasbourg on 19 and 20 October. In addition to current developments in the EEA, the founding meeting of the European Political Community held on 6 October in Prague will also be discussed.

The EEA Joint Parliamentary Committee is a forum composed of members of the national parliaments of the EEA/EFTA States of Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, as well as members of the European Parliament. Its task is to contribute to a better understanding between the EU and the EFTA States in the areas covered by the EEA Agreement through dialogue and debate. Switzerland has observer status in the EEA Joint Parliamentary Committee. The Federal Assembly is represented in this committee by the EFTA/EU Delegation.

Among other things, the talks will cover relevant developments in security issues, the economy and energy supply in the EEA, including the Union secure connectivity programme, which aims to provide secure and competitive satellite communications services, and the draft of a Cyber Resilience and Cybersecurity Act. In addition, in view of recent developments, the security of energy supply in Europe, the war in Ukraine as well as the first summit of the European Political Community on 6 October in Prague will be discussed.

The meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee will be attended by Delegation President Benedikt Würth (The Centre, SG), Vice-President Thomas Aeschi (SVP, ZG), National Council members Elisabeth Schneider-Schneiter (The Centre, BL), Eric Nussbaumer (SP, BL) and Hans-Peter Portmann (FDP.The Liberals, ZH), as well as Council of State members Hannes Germann (SVP, SH) and Carlo Sommaruga (SP, GE).
