Switzerland and Poland have enjoyed very good relations for many years, including wide-ranging exchanges in the cultural and economic sectors. Friendly exchanges have also taken place at parliamentary level.
The official talks on 16 August focused on bilateral relations and in particular on cooperation in connection with the second Swiss contribution to selected EU member states, of which Poland is the most important recipient country. The implications of the Russian attack on Ukraine and the efforts made by Poland and Switzerland in this area were also discussed. Poland has taken in more than 1.6 million displaced people since the start of Russian aggression against Ukraine, making it the primary destination for people fleeing Ukraine. The Marshal of the Polish Senate also spoke about the situation on Poland's border with Belarus and the challenges facing his country in the area of the rule of law and relations with the EU. Another topic of discussion was the parliamentary elections to be held in both Switzerland and Poland in October.
In addition to the official meeting with Ms Häberli-Koller, Professor Grodzki was also received by President of the National Council Martin Candinas. Professor Grodzki, who is a surgeon and professor of medicine, visited the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biophysics on ETH Zurich’s Hönggerberg campus and paid visits to various Polish institutions in Rapperswil.
Following their meeting in Warsaw in March, President of the Council of States Brigitte Häberli-Koller welcomed the Marshal of the Senate of Poland to the Federal Palace on 16 August for a continuation of the talks.
